Bluewater Lure Color Selection: What the Water Actually Tells You

Color is the thing everyone obsesses over in a tackle shop, and it’s the smallest lever of the four that actually decide whether a spread gets bit. Speed and action come first — a perfectly colored lure tracking crooked or running at the wrong speed catches nothing. Spread position is next — where a lure sits relative to the wake and the other baits matters more than its paint job. Size profile is third — a 9-inch lure in the “wrong” color out-fishes a 4-inch lure in the “right” one if the local bait is 9-inch ballyhoo. Color is what tips the odds once the first three are already dialed in. It’s the difference between three strikes and five, not zero and five.
That doesn’t make it a rounding error, though. Here’s what’s actually happening underwater, and the simple framework that covers almost every day you’ll fish.
Depth is eating your color before the fish ever see it
Water filters light by wavelength, and it does it fast. Red is essentially gone by 15–20 feet down. Orange follows by 30 feet. Yellow hangs on until 50–60 feet. Below that, blue, violet, and green are the only colors left in the water at all — a red-and-black lure at 80 feet doesn’t look red anymore, it looks gray. Most trolling baits run somewhere in the 5–30 foot band, which means the reds and oranges you’re admiring on the dock are already dimming by the time a fish sees the lure at typical trolling depth, even before you factor in murky water or low light cutting into that range further.
In low light, silhouette beats hue
Once color starts fading, fish shift to reading contrast and shape instead of exact color — a dark lure held up against a lighter surface from below throws a stronger, more recognizable silhouette than a bright lure with weak contrast against the same background. That’s the real reason black, dark purple, and blue/black lures produce at dawn, dusk, and any real depth: not because dark is somehow a “magic” color, but because it’s the color that still reads as a shape when everything else has washed to gray.
Two other things are going on that complicate the simple “dark is better in low light” rule:
- UV-reactive colors cheat the depth filter. Chartreuse and hot pink pigments fluoresce under ultraviolet light that fish can see and we can’t, which is why they keep producing at depths where the visible-light physics says they should already be invisible.
- Flash matters independent of color. Holographic inserts and mirror-polished metal create an intermittent flicker as a lure rolls and rotates, and fish read that flicker as a fleeing baitfish catching the light — a trigger that works whether the lure underneath is blue, black, or pink.
The conditions cheat sheet
- Clear blue water, calm and bright: natural colors — blue/white, green/yellow — plus anything with real flash. Fish can see detail at distance here, so profile and action matter as much as color.
- Green water (nearshore, after a blow, upwelling): shift toward higher-contrast colors — black/purple, dark red/black, hot pink. Visibility’s down, so fish are leaning more on vibration and silhouette than fine color detail.
- Dirty water (post-storm, river outflow): go dark and go loud — all-black, black/red, maximum contrast. At this point color is nearly irrelevant; action and commotion are what actually gets found.
- Dawn and dusk: darker colors read as a stronger silhouette against the dim sky, regardless of water clarity.
- Bright midday sun: there’s enough light to activate flash and bright colors, so this is when they earn their keep.
- Overcast: split the difference — run both a dark and a bright option rather than betting the whole spread on one read of the light.
The two-color rule
The framework that actually removes the guesswork: run two color families in every spread instead of committing to one. One natural family (blue/white, green/yellow, or a bare ballyhoo profile) covers clear water and bright, sight-feeding conditions. One dark-contrast family (black/purple, black/red, dark blue) covers low light, deeper-running positions, and fish keying on silhouette instead of color. Whichever family gets hit first, shift the rest of the spread toward it — the fish are telling you which read is right that day, and a mono-color spread never gives you that signal in the first place.
What I run

Bottom line
Get the speed, spread position, and size profile right first — color doesn’t fix a badly run spread. Once those are dialed in, run a natural family and a dark-contrast family side by side, watch which one the fish actually eat, and lean the rest of the spread that direction. That’s the whole system; everything past it is tackle-shop marketing.
