Drag Setting Calculator
Enter what you're spooled with and get strike and full drag numbers in pounds — the settings you'd dial in with a scale before the season, not guess at with your thumb during a fight.
Strike: 15 lb Full: 22 lb
How to actually set it
Numbers are only useful if you measure them: run the line through the rod guides, hook a hand scale to the end, and pull with the rod at fighting angle while a buddy reads the scale as the drag slips. Set your lever-drag's strike button to the strike number; the full number is roughly what you'll see pushed past strike — use it sparingly and only with the fish straight up and down.
Why braid gets a lower percentage: no stretch. Mono absorbs surges; braid transfers every headshake straight to the knot, so the cushion has to come from the drag. And on any braid-with-topshot setup, calculate from the weakest component in the system — usually the topshot or leader, not the braid.
Context for the numbers: our wahoo program runs 20+ lb at strike on heavy tackle, and the reasons lever drag makes these settings repeatable are covered in the trolling reel buyer's guide.
